This is us!! If you are looking for solitude, peace and quiet, Les Chagnasses Rural Gites is perfect for you.

We are equidistant from the lovely towns of Chalais, Montmoreau and Barbezieux where you will find weekly markets, bars, restaurants and shops.

Aubeterre sur Dronne, one of France’s most beautiful villages, is just a 20 minute drive south, and the Dordogne only 10 minutes further.

Angoulême is 45 minutes north, Saint Emillion about an hour South, and the coastal resort of Royan 90 minutes West.

There’s plenty to keep you busy at Les Chagnasses Rural Gîtes:

In the vicinity

As well as the pretty villages, historic towns, churches and lots of chateaux in our part of the Charente, you can also find lovely places to swim, canoe, fish, cycle, play golf, go horse-riding, wine tasting or enjoy a woodland zip-wire.

Places to visit within an hour from Les Chagnasses Rural Gîtes: 

  • Aubeterre-sur-Dronne – one of Frances most beautiful villages. Market day Sunday.
  • Saint-Séverin – lovely restaurants, mini-golf, Spar supermarket.
  • Angoulême – the capital of the Charente region and a beautiful city to explore.
  • The Dordogne – the border is a short drive east from Poullignac.

We love eating out, especially for lunch; here are our favourite local eateries or picnic spots: 

  • Stoney Oak Family Farm, Poullignac, for excellent afternoon teas and evening pizzas.
  • Chez Isa, Saint-Martial, for delicious home-cooked French cuisine
  • Quai Sud, L’Etang Vallier, Brossac, for alfresco lunches overlooking the lake
  • Le Moulin de Grand Fief, Condeon, for panoramic picnics by a restored windmill.

    • Brantôme – a beautiful small town to visit and explore.
    • Jonzac – an historic town centre which is really worth a visit.
    • Cognac – Hennessy distillery, river cruises and much more to see. Market day Friday.
    • Jarnac – Courvoisier distillery, riverside walks and much more.
    • Bordeaux – a magnificent city surrounded by wonderful vineyards with wines to savour.
    • The Atlantic Sea – Royan and the Bay of Biscay are about 90 minutes west
